Description

THE PSYLOCKE SERIES: PART SIX
*May contain spoilers.*

The Series ~~> [link]

#1- After getting dumped by Archangel for acting like a hoe and practically dry-humping Thunderbird right in front of him, Psylocke joins Storm’s team in X-TREME X-MEN (2001) and hooks up with Thunderbird. She dons this black version of her original ninja bathing suit costume, a little fancier to fit the book’s style. The team heads to Spain on their quest to find Destiny’s diaries, and Psylocke promptly gets her ass killed by Vargas. She’s buried at the Braddock Estate in England, everyone cries, the end.

#2- Ha ha, of course that’s not the end. Everybody knew she’d be back, just like we knew Colossus would be back, just like we know Shadowcat and Jean will be back eventually, so whatever. Anyway, in UNCANNY X-MEN #455 (2005) Psylocke mysteriously reappeared at the same spot where she died, one year later, unchanged except for the loss of her Crimson Dawn tattoo. Since the X-Treme costumes had gone out of style by then, she was given a blue & gold uniform, which she wore for several adventures before returning full time to the X-Men. This version is slightly different than previous ones with the high collar, low-slung belt and zipper, and I find it pretty cool, despite the fact that I despise Alan Davis.

#3- So going along with everyone’s “being dead and coming back to life is no big fucking deal around here” attitude, Psylocke, upon rejoining the X-Men, returned to her ninja bathing suit costume (circa 2006) as if nothing ever happened. This is a very slightly different version via Chris Bachalo, with a wider belt and colored purple instead of blue. Psylocke eventually finds out that her older brother Jamie, who, by the way, is completely batshit insane, was the one who resurrected her using his apparently god-level reality-warping powers, and made her “immune to psionic and mental manipulation including telepathic communication, invisible to all forms of electronic detection, and also resistant to the effects of reality manipulation.” (comicvine)

#4- After the run in with Jamie, Betsy decides she needs to go have a talk with Brian about their brother, and while in England she helps New Excalibur fight an alternate reality version of Professor X who is possessed by the Shadow King. Just at the battle’s climax, she disappears in a flash of light and ends up with the New Exiles in their book that I haven’t read and served on that team for a while in this blue & purple costume circa 2008. This might be a good time to point out that my scanner totally sucks, as whenever a picture contains both blue & purple it has a fucking heart attack and messes it all up. This looked much better before I scanned it. Anyway, at some point New Exiles and New Excalibur crossover in the DIE BY THE SWORD mini-series, after which Psylocke decides to stay with the Exiles. Then the book ends in 2009 and she somehow returns to our reality, though how this happens is apparently nobody’s business. Anyway, there’s something that happens with the Red Queen in UNCANNY X-MEN #’s 508-511 that basically resurrects and re-kills Betsy’s original body, hopefully leaving her Japanese once and for all. Also, she is again a telepath, while retaining her telekinesis, and has returned to full time duty as an X-Men. Apparently she has a mini-series right now where she will be returning to Japan to kill Matsuo. Looks pretty cool.

As for that Gabriel guy she was supposed to marry that I mentioned way back in part one? Yeah, I don’t have the slightest clue what happened with that.

Up until her Marvel Now! costume, the Alan Davis version of the blue-and-gold outfit was my favorite suit. There's something elegant and classy about it, more so than any of her other costumes since the armor.

Of course, in addition to Storm, Marvel Now! and Oliver Coipiel gave us the awesomest Psylocke costume I have ever seen and as far as I'm concerned she should wear it for the next two decades.
