THE EMMA FROST SERIES: PART TWO
*May contain spoilers.*

The Series ~~> [link]

#1 – In UNCANNY X-MEN #281-284 (1991-1992) the White Queen, while sporting a new but only slightly different outfit, and her Hellions are attacked at a Hellfire Club party by time-traveling criminal Trevor Fitzroy and a group of Sentinel robots. Emma is injured and left comatose, while her students are all brutally slaughtered. But that’s okay, the Hellions pink & purple bodysuits were stupid. Anyway, Jean is also injured in the fight, and transfers her consciousness into Emma’s body for a short time. Looking back on this, one might be lead to wonder if this had any influence on later events. Hmm. The X-Men take Emma’s body to the mansion’s sick bay, where she remains for a long time. Later, in UNCANNY X-MEN #311-314 (1994), Emma is suddenly awaken and, reacting on instinct, switches bodies with Iceman and escapes the mansion. She discovers the fate of the Hellions, though, and is so bummed out about it that she voluntarily returns to the X-Men and her own body, deciding it might be better to follow Xavier’s ways, wrapping up a spectacularly unsuccessful career as an X-villain.

#2 – In 1994, during the PHALANX COVENANT story arc (UNCANNY X-MEN #316+317, X-MEN #36-37), the X-Men’s main team are abducted and replaced by Phalanx replicas, who were apparently unaware of the presence of Banshee, Jubilee and Sabretooth, as well as Emma Frost, who is still detained and recovering from her coma in the mansion’s sickbay. Emma, in this green bodysuit that may or may not have served a purpose, I don’t remember, joins the others to round up some new young mutants targeted by the Phalanx, but only manage to get to Synch first. Later they are able to free the others, M, Husk, and Skin, from the Phalanx. This story arc is pretty much the turning point for Emma’s character, completing her transition from villain to hero. More or less. As much of a turn as Emma’s ever going to make, I guess.

#3 – GENERATION X debuted in 1994, and Emma’s Massachusetts Academy became the X-Men’s newest School for Gifted Youngsters focusing on the emerging generation of mutants. Emma joined Banshee as the school’s co-mentor, the two often butting heads but getting along surprisingly well. Severely traumatized by the deaths of her Hellions, Emma is often very protective of her young charges, sometimes leading to extreme measures. Ask her sister. Wait, no, you can’t, somebody shot her. Oh well. Anyway, I recall when GEN X came out it was a really big deal. I’ve read about half of them, but that was quite a while ago, so I don’t plan to cover much of Emma’s activity during this period. It is worth pointing out that while acting as an instructor to GEN X, Emma does dress in a somewhat more conservative and professional manner. In other words, she actually starts wearing pants. GENERATION X also spawned a made-for-TV movie that totally sucked balls and starred Finola Hughes (General Hospital, Charmed) as Emma Frost and Jeremy Ratchford (the fat guy from Cold Case) as Banshee. It was supposed to be spun-off into a series but it was the most god-awful thing ever, so that didn’t happen. Thankfully.

#4 – Another of Emma’s outfits while with GEN X. I really don’t have anything to say on this one. I will mention how interesting it is to see the changes in Chris Bachalo’s artwork between the grittier-looking early issues of GENERATION X and the later ones, where he starts to take on the more polished, cartoon-like style he still uses today. I like them both, myself. Chris is one of my all-time favorite X-artists, along with Joe Madureira, the Kubert boys, Jim Lee, Mark Silvestri, Mike Choi, and early Salvador Larroca. Just thought I’d share.
